HISTORY
OF HOMEOPATHY
The concepts of Homeopathy are found in writings
dating back more than 6,000 years - including the work of
Hippocrates, who is often recognized as the founder of modern
medicine. In the late 18th century, Samuel
Hahnemann, a German chemist and physician dissatisfied with the
ineffective and extremely harmful medical practices of his day,
rediscovered the wisdom of Homeopathy as he translated ancient
medical texts. Under his guidance, Homeopathy became an art, as
well as a science, grounded in the basic laws of nature.
The United States has a strong history in
Homeopathy. In the late 1800’s, 20 medical schools and 20% of
all doctors were Homeopathic. The first women’s college and the
first medical association were Homeopathic as well. During WWI,
the medical corps included Homeopathic practitioners.
Homeopathy has successfully treated people during the Scarlet
Fever, Cholera and 1918
H1N1
flu epidemics.
Homeopathy also has a strong presence around the
world. England and Scotland have Homeopathic hospitals,
while 40%
of all doctors in France practice Homeopathy. Medical schools
in Germany require Homeopathy as part of their curriculum.
There are 400 Homeopathic hospitals and over 100,000
practitioners in India, even Mother Theresa when she was alive.
The United
Nation’s World Health Organization has declared that Homeopathy
should be integrated into health care worldwide.
WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY?
Homeopathy does not treat the disease
directly, but stimulate the body to heal itself in a gentle,
safe and natural way.
Classical Homeopathy is the style of Homeopathy that
follows the guidance of Hahnemann. Under this method, one
remedy will be prescribed for all the symptoms a person
expresses. That is, one remedy will treat the mental, emotional
and physical symptoms at the same time. The remedy will be
individually chosen for each person based on their own
combination of health issues and family history.
Prescription drugs used by modern medicine are
designed to treat a single symptom. Instead of healing the
underlining problem, they suppress the symptom. Often times,
this
creates side effects for which new medications are then
prescribed. Symptoms may reappear when the prescription drugs
are no longer taken.
Taking drugs to suppress symptoms is like going
to an auto mechanic and asking to have the warning light in your
car disconnected. Sure, you have temporarily removed the
symptom, but the real problem is still there and you can be sure
more serious and expensive symptoms will appear later.
Disease is not something from the outside that infects
us. Instead, it is an imbalance within us that makes us
susceptible to outside forces. We have a physical body, as well
as an energetic body that controls the physical body. It is
the dis-harmony or disease within our energetic selves that
creates disease. The resulting symptoms play two important
roles — they tell us that something in our body is out of
balance and they help the body heal itself. For example, a
fever elevates the body’s temperature and kills bacteria in the
process. Suppressing a fever or other symptoms with medication
only forces the body to create new symptoms, often of a more
serious nature. In comparison, Classical Homeopathy works with
the body to support and strengthen the natural healing
response.
WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM
HOMEOPATHY?
“A sad soul will kill you quicker, far quicker,
than a germ”
John Steinbeck
Homeopathy
is safe and effective for everyone, including children, pregnant
women, the elderly, farm animals and pets. It also works well for a wide variety of
conditions - from the small things that keep you from enjoying
life to the fullest to the serious problems. Starting
Homeopathic treatment when only minor symptoms are present is a
good idea, it works as prevention against larger issues.
As an example, young children who are treated
homeopathically for ear aches may go through puberty easier,
since mental and emotional issues have already been addressed.
Remember Homeopathy is holistic, where the whole person is
treated with each remedy.
Here are a few examples of mental,
emotional and physical issues that Homeopathy can improve.
Mental
fears, night terrors, anxiety, panic
attacks,
memory loss, confusion, concentration problems,
lethargy,
learning difficulties, speech problems
Client
Comment: “My mind has never been this quiet.
The voices telling me how to act are gone.”
Emotional
grief, prolonged sadness, despair,
anger issues, tantrums, behavioral problems,
eating disorders, addictions, emotional development,
relationships, effects of abuse
Client
Comment: “I’ve been feeling more optimistic—hopeful. Haven’t
felt depressed at all.”
“No suicidal thoughts since the remedy.”
Physical
accidents, sinus, allergies, asthma,
chronic fatigue, sleep disorders, bedwetting,
UTI’s, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, shingles,
chronic head aches, ear infections, teething, skin problems
Client
Comment: “Not as long as I have memory has my body been this
relaxed.
This is a new feeling for me.”
ACUTE SITUATIONS
In acute situations, Homeopathy reduces pain and
swelling, as well as shortens the healing period. Conventional
doctors have remarked on how well clients have healed after
injuries.
Arnica can be used in many situations. It
reduces the pain and swelling until a broken bone can be
properly set, then other remedies can be given to help the bone
heal faster. When used before and after surgery, Arnica speeds
up the recovery process. It can be followed by other remedies
that help heal incisions, minimize scar tissue and avoid
abdominal gas.
I recommend
that every family keeps Arnica
on hand for traumas and injuries.
Homeopathy is still beneficial years after the
injury occurs. One of my clients sustained injuries due to
forceps being used during the birthing process. Fifty-three
years later, after being treated Homeopathically, the chronic
headaches and shoulder pains connected to that injury are now
gone.
Sudden
emotional trauma, grief and acute illnesses are other areas
where Homeopathy is beneficial.
YOUR PATH TO HEALTH
Healing
where mind, body and spirit merge in wholeness.
Your path to health is a conscious choice.
Homeopathy is a partnership where you take an active role in
your own healing process. As you attain a better understanding
and awareness of yourself, and are able to convey it to me, we
are able to achieve higher levels of health. Your concentration
is on
wellness, not illness.
Homeopathic services are directed at
strengthening your constitution, raising your general level of
health, and relieving symptoms. Homeopaths do not
diagnose or treat medical conditions.
Homeopaths identify the main symptoms and
concerns that are discussed during each appointment. By
comparing this list of characteristics to those known about each
remedy, the Homeopath can begin to identify the proper remedy
for each person.
Although you’ll quickly notice changes, your body
will need time to deeply heal a problem that may have begun
early in life. Therefore, it is
important to make a commitment to long-term health.
You might experience a healing response, where
symptoms are intensified for a short time. This indicates that
the remedy is working. Old symptoms that have been suppressed by
medications may also return temporarily, signifying that your
body is working through them in a healing way.
If you are
taking prescription drugs, the improvements will take longer.
It is recommended that you do not stop taking
any medications you are currently on. Later, as
Homeopathy takes effect, you may work with your physician to
adjust the doses.
THE HOMEOPATHIC
CONSULTATION
Client
comment: “I can’t believe how much my attitude has changed. I
don’t know if it is hearing myself say things out loud and
having someone really listen or the remedy or both.
I am pretty
sure it is both.”
Homeopathic treatment begins with an in-depth
consultation of approximately two hours. During this meeting, we
discuss a variety of topics such
as medical history, complaints and family history. This
extended conversation allows me the time to truly listen so I
can understand you and your concerns, enabling me to select the
correct remedy for your situation.
As we continue working together, it is my
responsibility to evaluate your progress and discuss it with
you. I will respect, appreciate and understand your journey
through life without judgment. Your responsibility is to
communicate as clearly and honestly as possible about
your symptoms and concerns so we can
both understand where you are currently on this
healing journey.
Homeopathic healing is often subtle, gentle and
gradual, so it is easy to take
progress for granted. Some people
may find it difficult to see the changes happening within
themselves. Items that might seem to be insignificant thoughts
or experiences may have significant meaning in your healing
process. This is why follow up appointments are essential.
If this
appointment is for your child, I recommend bringing their
favorite toy along so they feel more relaxed. I request that
childcare be arranged at another location for any child who does
not have a scheduled appointment. Homeopathy visits works best
if there are no distractions and everyone is comfortable to talk
freely.
